About Me

I am a trained UKCP accredited and BACP registered Psychotherapist specialising in a form of therapy that accelerates psychological change.

I am passionate about psychotherapy.  It has helped me to overcome and attain more than I imagined possible and I am dedicated to imparting this value to others.

Location

I have a practice in central Exeter, EX1

And in Dartmoor, Devon, TQ13, UK

I also work online internationally.

I am always happy to give therapist recommendations in the event that I am unable to work with you due to a lack of availability, or if we know one another or share the same local communities.

Fees

My standard fee is £80 per session.  I also have a limited number of concessionary places for people with low income and means.

Please call me to discuss your needs and to ask any questions.

Training

My original psychotherapy training is in Psychosynthesis.  Psychosynthesis combines psychoanalytic theory with eastern philosophy.  I was especially drawn to the ways in which Psychosynthesis accesses the unconscious through the imagination and creativity.  It is masterful in its hearing and reaching the voice of the soul in a tender and honouring way.  It is a psychotherapy that reignites meaning and connection.

Advanced training

Towards the end of my training one of my supervisors introduced me to ISTDP.  My practice benefited hugely from its thinking and methods, and I began attending ISTDP events.  I was amazed to see how this way of working got to the core of the matter so quickly and effectively.

I appreciated the care and precision taken by the ISTDP therapist in understanding the internal world and workings of the client.

It was clear to me how the visual assessment of biological factors and tracking of anxiety meant the therapy could go at a pace that is appropriately tailored to the client in each moment; that the work is progressing while also ensuring safety and collaboration.

Most poignant of all was to see the stance of the ISTDP therapist as conduit for all transferential feelings arising in the client, and how this role was taken up in such an unwavering and professional way.  This means links to the past are made instantaneously and organically by the client  through emotion alone; without the need to think up memory or narrative.

I was impressed by the rigorous reviewing of work in  ISTDP.  Videotape is regularly reviewed, and therapists’ mistakes are diligently acknowledged, worked out, and help sought when needed, in order to correct and alter the therapy where necessary. Which in turn of course improves quality of practice and outcomes overall.

I have spent the past seven years immersed in ISTDP: therapy, supervision, training.  I would one day like to incorporate some Psychosynthesis into ISTDP, but for now I continue to deepen my learning in this methodology, which I have found to be so powerful in bringing about change, and very fulfilling to work in.

Professional bodies

I am an accredited clinical member of the UK Council of Psychotherapists (UKCP). This means I adhere to their code of practice.

The UKCP requires psychotherapists to be trained to Masters degree level, which is understood to be a specialist level of training, requiring at least 4 years of postgraduate psychotherapy training, 500 client hours, supervision and personal therapy for the duration, psychiatric placement and thesis.

I am also a registered full clinical member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).

Professional standard

I continually review my work, both independently and with colleagues, to ensure I am working to the best possible standard.  I am committed to life-long learning and continual improvement through reflective study, review with colleagues, and continuous professional development (CPD).
